LOOK: Atlanta Braves will wear new ‘carbon fiber’ helmets at home opener

The brand new ballpark will offer fans plenty to look at in Friday night’s home opener, but Braves players themselves will also be a sight to see.

Atlanta (1-5) will play a series in Miami before opening SunTrust Park with its first regular-season game on Friday night, and the new stadium won’t be the only new sight for Braves fans.

The team will debut a new “carbon fiber” hydro-dipped style batting helmet, complete with a SunTrust Park inaugural season decal on the back.

Made popular by college baseball and football teams in recent years, the new look helmets aren’t yet a common theme among MLB and NFL teams, but the Braves will take that plunge this weekend.

Inspired by helmets Atlanta players and staff saw during a visit to the U.S. Naval Academy, Braves equipment manager Ben Acree thought up the new team head gear.

The helmets were produced by Rawlings, which is the official batting helmet provider of Major League Baseball.
