Recap: Southern blown out by Troy in Sun Belt Tournament loss

Troy was the fly in the ointment Friday night, spoiling a possible in-state matchup for two Georgia teams in the upcoming Sun Belt semifinals.

Georgia Southern (18-14, 11-7 Sun Belt) went into Sun Belt Conference Tournament play Friday night as the No. 3 seed, but couldn’t keep up with No. 6 Troy, losing in an upset 90-70.

The Eagles got 21 points from guard Ike Smith, and had two other players in double-digits, but it wasn’t enough as GSU didn’t have an answer for Troy’s Jordon Varnado, who put up 26. The Trojans also got a 17-point effort off the bench from Jeremy Hollimon.

Troy will move on to play Georgia State in the Sun Belt semifinals on Saturday, a team that Southern lost to 72-67 just days ago in their regular season finale.
